DiCobaltOctaCarbonyl
DiCobalt OctaCarbonyl, also known as Cobalt Carbonyl, is a versatile reagent and catalyst in organometallic chemistry and organic synthesis.
Chemical Structure
The structure of the compound consists of 4 carbonyl ligands on each cobalt atom and the two cobalt atoms linked to each other.
Properties & Applications
This compound decomposes to carbon monoxide and ultrafine cobalt powder when exposed to air / room temperature and is widely used as an in-situ source for cobalt atoms for catalysis, special reactions, organic synthesis, and other unique applications.
Potential Uses
- Production of tricyclic enone compounds, which are further hydrogenated to produce tricyclic ketone compounds. This is part of the production process for treprostinil, a synthetic analog for prostacyclin. The chemical is used in the treatment for hypertension.
 - Catalytic carbonylation of epoxides, aziridines, thiiranes, oxetanes, lactones, lactams etc.
 - Oxygenated organic compounds such as aldehydes, alcohols, esters can be produced by reacting olefins with carbon monoxide and hydrogen at elevated temperatures and pressures, in the presence of a cobalt catalyst.
 - Reactions where a combination catalyst of cobalt source and pyridine are used.
 - Hydroformylation of dodecene mixture, for preparing surfactant alcohols and surfactant alcohol ethers.
 - Preparing derivatives of alpha-phenyl propionic acid.
 - Synthesis of lupeose, an amorphous sugar.
 - CVD coatings (chemical vapor deposition) made with DCOC and a silane to form cobalt silicide.
 - Low temperature ALD (atomic layer deposition) or CVD coatings of cobalt based thin films.
